Cooking Show Features Economical Tips for Cooks on a Budget

Sandra Lee premieres Sandra's Money Saving Meals on Food Network, a series designed to help cooks prepare delicious family meals while cutting costs in current economy.

Sandra Lee’s Semi Home Made has been a popular and successful series on the Food Network. On May 10, Sandra Lee is premiering Sandra’s Money Saving Meals on Food Network. The new show is designed to help people save money with shopping smart and using clever cooking techniques. Recently, Sandra Lee participated in a conference call interview and question and answer session.

Sandra Lee’s Food Network Show, Semi Home Made was already a success 18 months ago when the cooking show host looked forward into the next phase of food. Sandra Lee saw that the economy was getting bad are realized that there was a big need for feeding the family on a budget. This was start of her idea for the new cookbook Money Saving Meals.

Sandra Lee stated was raised on welfare and food stamps, which is why she knows how to shop and make something out of nothing.

Sandra Lee Saves 39% to 50% on Grocery Shopping

According to Sandra Lee, The new show always starts in the grocery store, with Sandra shopping and sharing shopping tips. One of the first things that Sandra identified was that name brands tend to go on sale in the beginning of the month. Store brands, which are less expensive anyway, tend to go on sale at the end of the month, when people have less money.

She found that by smart shopping they could save 39 to 50 percent savings on the grocery bill, which is a tremendous savings. Sandra stated that she was really proud of the team who helped put the show together and that she was excited about helping people to put together enjoyable meals on a limited budget.

Money Saving Tips from Sandra Lee

Sandra Lee shared some of the shopping and cooking tips that she talks about on the show.

She spoke about shopping for less expensive cuts of meat, such as flank steak. Cooking with less fatty cuts of meat may require different cooking techniques and she highly recommends use of a slow cooker, which is convenient and economical to use.

When asked about substituting spices, Sandra Lee stated that spices are one of the most expensive ingredients that can be used, but are also necessary. Pumpkin pie spice can be used anytime a recipe calls for nutmeg, cinnamon or similar spices. She also stated that dried herbs are important to keep on hand.

Sandra Lee also mentioned that chicken thighs are a great money saving cut of poultry that is much less expensive than chicken breasts.

Sandra Lee Trained at Le Cordon Bleu

Sandra Lee was trained at the Le Cordon Bleu and said she was mentored by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck. She uses her expertise in gourmet cooking to develop recipes and techniques to help the people in America who need help to feed their families responsibly. She stated that she uses a 70/30 percent premade and homemade concept in Semi Home Made. When asked how her philosophy fit in with what she learned a Cordon Bleu, she said that getting the right recipe results depends on ingredients. In order to get the same results, a cook needs to know which name brand was used, because all brands are different. She also shared that when she was at Cordon Bleu she would often rewrite recipes to make them simpler to prepare.

She Lee concluded the interview by stating her goal was that meals should be healthy and enjoyable for the family. With Sandra’s Money Saving Tips, the family meal could become less stressful and more fun for the cook and for the entire family.

Sandra’s Money Saving Meals airs on Food Network on Sundays at 12 pm (noon) Eastern Time.
